June 27th Meeting Notice

Hello Neighbors!

Our June Community meeting will be held on Thursday June 27th at the 2601 Pennsylvania Avenue Community Room. 7:00 pm for refreshments, 7:30 pm meeting start time. Our usual location has a conflict on that evening.

We have been trying to get someone from the Philadelphia Office of Homeless Services to attend but they have not committed at the time of the email.

2100 West Girard Updates

From the last meeting we have set up a google group. You can email (2100-girard@fairmountcivicassociation.org) any tips photos or other issues you have related to the facility.

You can email board@fairmountcivicassociation.org to join the group where you can see information we have gathered and collaborate with neighbors on issues.

Councilmember Jeffery Young has had legislation passed to block the renewal of the facility’s lease without permission from council https://6abc.com/post/philadelphia-city-council-blocks-lease-renewal-city-run/14950825/.

Council has also granted a hearing on the administration’s use of the facility with more info coming.

Flowering Fronts of Fairmount Contest

The FCA will again host the Flowering Front of Fairmount this summer. The event encourages residents to green and beautify the neighborhood as well as recognizes our neighbors for their talents. Entries should be within the FCA boundaries, include the front or side of the building, and no professionally cared for gardens (we do appreciation, but this contest is for amateurs)

Judging will be in July and you do not have to be home for judging. Winners and prizes to be announced at the summer social at Jack’s Firehouse in July.

Lemon Hill to Host FIFA Fan Festival in 2026

Lemon Hill has been selected to host the 2026 FIFA Fan Festival in 2026 in a press conference held yesterday. You can view more details in this article:

The event which will run throughout most of June and July of 2026 will bring a lot of fun but also congestion to the neighborhood.

We will also hopefully get some much needed funding for improvements to the park. The Lemon Hill Neighbors Association has drafted a letter expressing excitement and issues related to the event which we hope to cosign with them.

Meeting Schedule

The September 27th meeting is tentatively scheduled to be held at the Fairmount Rowing Association #2. More details to come.

22nd Street Bike Lane

There are some changes coming to the 22nd Street bike lane which includes a proposal to extend the bike lane from Spring Garden to Brown Street.

The proposal was presented at the Spring Garden Civic Association and they have posted details on their website. We hope to have the organizers present at a future meeting.

2100 Girard Alert – Info and Action Items

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ALERT

From

THE FAIRMOUNT CIVIC ASSOCIATION

The Fairmount Civic Association (FCA) is alerting the community of an expansion of a homeless shelter at 2100 Girard Avenue, formerly operated by the City of Philadelphia as the 400+/-bed Philadelphia Nursing Home. Around 2013, the City opened a 132-bed shelter within the nursing home for long term occupancy.  The nursing home was closed in 2022. Beginning in May 2024, the city began expansion of the shelter to add an additional 150 beds.  Adam Thiel, Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia, confirms that individuals admit themselves on a voluntary basis, and are not pre-screened for substance abuse, drugs or criminal history.  No controls or curfews are imposed on the ability of individuals to leave and re-enter the facility, nor are they checked for illegal drugs or weapons upon re-entry. At present, on any given night, approximately 40 to 50 of the 150 additional beds are filled.

The surrounding communities have been reporting an increase in drug paraphernalia on the streets and illegal activity including open-air drug use, trespassing and vandalism.

The FCA is actively working with the community, 9th and 22nd Police districts and Council Member Jeffery Young’s Office to ensure our neighborhoods are clean and safe.  If you see or have been the victim of any illegal activity, please call 911 so that the incident is documented.  Any pictures documenting illegal activity or drug paraphernalia should be time stamped and geo-coded if possible, and sent to TIPS@Phillypolice.com and board@fairmountcivicassociation.org. This documentation will be used by the police department to determine the deployment of patrols.

If you would like to help and get involved, please email board@fairmountcivicassociation.org. We have set up a Google group to help neighbors work collaboratively on issues they are experiencing.
